It has been proved that the consumption of water
by the activities of the Group companies does not
affect aquifer levels or the quantity of the water avail-
able for use or the capability of an ecosystem to func-
tion. Irrespective of this fact, however, PROTERGIA S.A.
and DELPHI-DISTOMON have not yet determined tar-
gets and related actions for water savings in their pro-
duction processes.
ACTION PLAN:
Establishment and gradual incorporation of targets
and proposals for continuous improvement in the
Group companies, focusing on the achievement of
the highest possible conservation and on the reuse
of water in their production processes.
Group's total water consumption is around 6m
3
to 7.5m
3
per person annually. The goal is to limit
this consumption initially to 4.5m
3
to 6m
3
per person
annually. NOTE: DELPHI-DISTOMON has already
achieved its desired water consumption level, which is
<1.5m
3
per person annually.
ACTION PLAN:
To take action at company-level with the aim of
achieving a consumption level for potable water in
the range of 4.5m
3
to 6m
3
per person annually.
Incidents at the level of facilities, involving main-
ly the spillage of lubricants in the soil in under-
ground tunnels, due to the breakdown of machinery.
These incidents were of a limited extent and their im-
pact was reversible. NB: This performance refers only
to the Group’s mining and aluminium production ac-
tivities.
ACTION PLAN:
DELPHI-DISTOMON S.A. has already set a target for
reduction of the number of incidents involving spills,
to be achieved primarily by informing the compa-
ny’s contractors of the need for better maintenance
of their machinery or for its replacement with new-
er-technology equipment, where required.
The locations of the Group’s business activities do
not form part of any area protected by law or des-
ignated as an area of high biodiversity value. Never-
theless, the activities of PROTERGIA S.A. at local lev-
el result in a minimal disturbance to the existing flora
and fauna, and the company has developed and ap-
plied special rehabilitation studies and has also carried
out environmental development projects (Environmental
parks etc.). Additionally, a more thorough study is re-
quired to accurately assess the impacts on biodiversi-
ty of the disposal of bauxite residues on land by
ALUMINIUM S.A.
ACTION PLAN:
No deviation from the policy of PROTERGIA S.A. As
a result of our efforts for full compliance of the com-
pany’s production plants with the environmental
rules and regulations in force, disturbance to the lo-
cal flora and fauna is negligible. ALUMINIUM S.A. to
explore the possibility for a study on the impacts on
biodiversity of its disposal of bauxite residues on land.
Since the launch of the Group’s business activity,
80% to 100% of the areas affected have been ful-
ly rehabilitated.
ACTION PLAN:
No deviation from our policy. We are continuing
with the rehabilitation of affected areas, with re-
spect to the natural environment and with a view
to minimising the impact of our activities on bio-
diversity.
