8.3 Energy consumption
Aluminium production and electricity
production are our two most energy-
intensive activities, accounting for 50%
and 49%, respectively, of the Group’s to-
tal consumption of direct primary energy
in 2012. The group’s total energy con-
sumption increased by approximately
116% compared to 2011, driven pri-
marily by the full operation of the pow-
er production plant of PROTERGIA S.A.
in Ag. Nikolaos (Viotia) throughout
2012 and the launch of the commercial
operation of the company’s power pro-
duction plant in Ag. Theodoroi (Korithia)
in April 2012.
The quantity of energy purchased
and used by the Group in 2012 came
exclusively from non-renewable
sources and increased by approxi-
mately 60%, as extensive use was
made of natural gas, as the primary fu-
el in the production processes of all
Group companies.
The energy produced by the Group in-
creased by approximately 622%, driv-
en primarily by the quantities con-
tributed by the consumption of fuels
and the High-Efficiency Combined
Heat and Power (CHP) Plant of
ALUMINIUM S.A., as well as by the op-
eration of the power production plants
of PROTERGIA S.A. It should be not-
ed that the energy produced from RES
plants accounted for 2.8% of the
Group’s total energy production.
