METLEN is strengthening the position of M RESET within its Energy Sector in the field of battery energy storage systems (BESS), with major projects and milestones in the UK, Italy and Greece, highlighting the Company’s growing footprint in grid-scale storage infrastructure.
In the UK, METLEN recently signed a BoP (Balance of Plant) contract with Pulse Clean Energy for the landmark 129MW Penn BESS project in the West Midlands with installed battery capacity of 362MWh. It is the largest energy storage project the Company has undertaken in the country to date, in terms of storage capacity.
Pulse Clean Energy is a fast-growing UK developer and operator of battery storage, with a growing pipeline of projects supporting the decarbonisation of the electricity system and enabling greater integration of renewable generation. It has one of the UK’s largest battery storage fleets at 400MWh, with another 400MWh in build and ambitions to reach 2GWh by 2030.
The scope of work for METLEN on the project also includes grid connection works, another crucial link in the integration of renewable energy. Energisation of the site is expected by the end of 2027.
This significant project further grows METLEN’s footprint in battery storage delivery across the UK, as the country’s energy landscape is evolving. Across the UK, METLEN has delivered or is currently working on a total of approximately 30 battery storage units (including hybrid/collocated solar and battery projects), representing nearly 2GWh of energy storage capacity, in collaboration with leading partners.
In Italy, METLEN has secured €18 million in long-term financing for a 25MW / 75MWh BESS project in Apulia, in the province of Brindisi. The project became fully operational within the year and benefits from a 7-year physical Tolling Agreement with Dolomiti Energia Group. This long-term financing agreement constitutes one of the first of its type in the Italian energy storage market and reflects an advanced commercial model already well established at a European level.METLEN has been active in the Italian market since 2017, steadily expanding its presence across the country. Today, the Company has established a diversified portfolio in Italy, including around 3 GWh of energy storage capacity.
In Greece, in partnership with Karatzis Group of Companies, METLEN has developed the largest standalone battery storage unit planned to date in the country and one of the biggest in Europe. Located in Thessaly region, the project has a capacity of 330MW with installed battery capacity 790MWh.
The unit’s output has now been integrated into the national electricity transmission system, marking a key step towards full operational function and participation in grid services.
At the same time, a 48MW / 96MWh battery storage project was recently completed in Polygyros, in Halkidiki, Central Macedonia. The ‘Aenaos’ project was implemented under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, with funding from the European Union / NextGenerationEU.
Together, these projects demonstrate METLEN’s view of battery storage not as a complementary technology, but as a critical enabler of the energy transition: it supports renewable energy integration, provides grid flexibility and stabilisation services, strengthens energy security, reduces curtailment and helps create a more resilient and reliable power system.
